A North Shore phenomenon that you should not miss is Kahuku Shrimp. Bring your cash and your appetite for some of the freshest shrimp on the island.
If you ever find yourself on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, I recommend trying Kahuku Shrimp at one of these trucks or shacks. On a strip of Kamehameha Highway, just west of Kuhuku Sugar Mill lies an area with three shrimp trucks/shacks. This day I stopped at Fumi’s.
What is fun about the shrimp served at these shacks is that they are grown on the premises.
First thing to remember is that the places I have tried so far are cash only. You do not want to be hungry with only a credit card. Next, the menus are very simple with shrimp or prawns served with different sauces. Garlic, spicy, salt & pepper, teriyaki or sweet & sour are just some examples. Often, there are other alternatives like a hamburger for those in your group who don’t like shrimp or are allergic to it. There is plenty of outdoor seating to eat your meal or just wait for your order number to be called.
We ordered plates of the garlic and the spicy variants. It came with rice, a little salad, and a piece of pineapple. The pineapple might seem cliche for Hawai’i, but after eating that SPICY shrimp, I was grateful for that sweet pineapple to cool my palate.
There are also shaved ice treats to take away the spiciness.
Try Fumi’s, Romy’s or Giovanni’s when you are on Oahu’s North Shore. You will not regret the fresh shrimp meal.
