Night Shopping Galore at Myeongdong

During the day, you can still see and walk easily through its main street and alleys. But wait 'til Myeongdong gets dark and you will be lost amidst the huge crowd of shoppers and tourists as well as makeshift stalls that are put up for the night market. Myeondong seems a lot livelier after 6:00pm.

After doing costume photo-op and attending a painting workshop at the Seoul Tourism Organization’s satellite office at Myeongdong, fangcarpenter and I decided to stay and wait for the night to fall on this bustling commercial district. We were surprised to see huge volumes of shoppers and tourists walking along the major street and in and out of the many shops with colorful and attractive window displays. With high rise buildings all around, Myeongdong hosts a multitude of upscale shopping centers, department stores, boutiques, restaurants, and investment and securities firms. Products on sale here range from mid-to-high priced. You will never be out of international fashion if you shop here considering the many choices of international and local brands including Louis Vuitton, Bulgari, Lacoste, Nature Republic, Polo Ralph Lauren, and Forever 21.

There were some stalls for street foods, which we excitingly tried. I loved the grilled sausages like the ones served at our hotel during breakfast. The other ones with what I thought could be sticky rice inside were an acquired taste. Nevertheless, they were all yummy and tummy-filling. Saw two young guys holding signs saying “free hugs” in English and Korean. And as a good foreigner would do, fangcarpenter availed of a warm hug from the cuter one of the two. LOL!

Myeongdong, which is located at the Jung-gu district is also the popular venue of many political protests, demonstrations, and advocacy campaigns.

If you avail of the Seoul City Bus Tours, Myeongdong happens to be one of the stops as part of the city’s efforts at promoting special tourism area.

The lights from all the shops never seemed to falter as well as voices of shop staff enticing shoppers to drop by and hopefully buy some items. Even saw a guy in a cat suit advertising a cafe. Myeongdong seems more alive at night when major roads are closed to traffic allowing more pedestrians on shopping frenzy.
