Kopaszi Gát: A Park Built on an Old Dike

A beautifully built park in the central area of Budapest, perfectly suitable for walks, picnics, and family programs. You can also find some nice places to drink and eat here.

The Kopaszi gát (in literal translation, Kopaszi dike) was originally built to narrow the Danube at Budapest to make the floods more manageable. A few years ago, it was recultivated and it is now a beautiful park with several excellent cafes and restaurants, plenty of grass to sit and have a picnic. You can also be in very direct contact with the river Danube if you want to. From spring to summer, it is a charming place which can be your first choice for a romantic date – in the fall and in winter, it is a quiet place where you can have a walk, can be alone and collect your thoughts before returning to town.

I was here first on a date myself with my girlfriend: she suggested a picnic; she also offered to prepare some food. I was looking forward at the opportunity and was also greatly touched by the atmosphere of this park. After a short stroll, we had our picnic at the very end of the dike (nowadays it seems more like a peninsula), under some trees which provided a nice shade. The view is really excellent from here: you can see along the Danube for a huge distance; a nearby, small power plant provides an interesting, but not at the least, disturbing industrial scenery.

The other thing that I really love in this place, is that if the water level is not too high, you can get real close to the Danube, and feel it’s characteristic fragrance. I like sitting on the stones or on an old trunk and read. I also like taking photos here.

The bank of this peninsula has a special feeling on its own: you can find the some remnants of the old architecture, and some nice willows to walk under them. On the other side of the dike, closer to the bank of the Danube, there is a small bay which is also very beautiful although much more organized.

As I said before, there are also a lot of nice places to have a beer or have something to eat. Most of these places are closed on the colder months, some of them continue to operate – they pull a heated tent above their terrace and some of them also has a nice interior – the kitchen is also very decent at these places, and the selection of drinks is also remarkable.
