My Close Encounter with The Nantong Youth Acrobatic Troupe Direct from China!

I almost had front row seats to a public acrobatics demonstration by the award-winning Nantong Youth Acrobatic Troupe from China! But I still managed to get some great photos of the performance!

In early January 2012, I caught the first public performance by the Nantong Youth Acrobatic Troupe direct from China, which was held at Singapore’s Raffles City Shopping Centre.

According to the performance agenda, three Chinese acrobatic troupes have been scheduled to perform as part of the shopping centre’s annual Lunar New Year event. Now into its 19th year, this 48-day long event themed ‘Spring in the City’, aims to promote traditional Chinese culture and its artistic heritage to locals and tourists alike.

It was fortunate that I went to the event early, as the show started ten minutes earlier than scheduled. However, when I got there, a small army of photographers had already gathered and commandeered the best vantage points for photographing the performance – the front row!

But that didn’t bother me as I had other ideas, which was partly the reason why I brought my Nikon FM10 SLR loaded with a homemade redscale film and the Olympus Trip 35 loaded with a roll of Fuji Superia 200 film. I was ready and pumped for action when the MC came on stage to get the ball rolling.

Within seconds, rather, when I turned around, a bigger crowd had formed. And they were already busy firing away with their digital cameras.

Here are some photos that I took of the performance.

Of course, sometimes it’s good to see what’s happening off-stage too.

I have to admit, it was exciting watching an acrobatic performance just five metres away from you. It was truly surreal! Yet, that was only half the fun for me that day. I also had as much fun watching the audience watching the performance. And how could I resist not capturing those moments?

Check out my albums for the rest of the photos snapped during this 30-minute performance.
