Neglected Beauty of Sungai Lembing

A once glorious tin mining town that has become dilapidated through time. We secured a 4 days, 3 nights production/working trip up north one day. Our destination, Sungai Lembing or Lembing River. If you are an 80s baby like me, you would probably have no idea at all where Sungai Lembing is. I bet some of you don’t even know it existed!

Oh well, I shall ‘enlighten’ you like how the trip has ‘enlightened’ me.

Sungai Lembing is a tin mining town 42 kilometres northwest of Kuantan, Pahang, Malaysia. Since it is a tin mining town previously, it doesn’t come too much of a surprise that this place was once the richest town in Pahang. Sadly, the once glorious town has faded together with its tin wealth because when we reached the town, it was more like an abandoned city. I am not exaggerating when I say the town’s image is like those in the “Resident Evil” series.

Most of the wooden shop lots were closed, the streets were empty and there weren’t many humans out and about. I got into character and became Will Smith in “I Am Legend”. I could seriously feel the loneliness and emptiness living in this small town.

This town reminds me of the fact that things and people change and evolve for survival. This town is an example of how people just left for other opportunities after its mining business shut down. Nevertheless, this place has its own great days that are worth remembering. Who knows, one day, it will come back to life again.

This is the first part of my Sungai Lembing trilogy. Stay tuned!
