Calaguas Island: A Break From the World

Still a bit unknown to a lot of people is the beautiful and unspoiled island of Calaguas in the Philippines. Situated in Camarines Norte, this island is truly a pristine and virgin beach. From Manila, it takes an 8-hour bus/van/car ride plus a 2-hour boat ride to get there.

However, seeing the place makes the long travel totally worth it.

No hotels, no restaurants, no private bathroom…you must truly be a “cowboy” to appreciate this place. You must not mind sleeping in a tent, sharing a public bathroom, or showering with a “tabo” (dipper) and “poso” (water pump). Then again, heck, if I was able to survive (and enjoy it even), then you should be just fine.

Here are photos of where we slept:

Fine sand, clear water, truly amazing!

A mountain trail lies at the side of the beach. It takes about a 10-minute hike up the trail to see the view of the beach.

There is no cellular phone signal here too. Some parts of the beach are marked with bamboo posts which means you can get 1 bar of signal on your cellphone if you stand on that spot. But that’s what makes Calaguas so beautiful! It’s untouched. It’s simple: no concept of time, away from technology, out of touch from everyone…it truly is a break from the world.
