Many people travel to sunnier places to avoid the cold during winter, but I knew I had to go to Venice, for the city's mysterious, foggy appeal and seeming emptiness that adds to its unique atmosphere. So it's there where I spent five days on my own for my winter holiday!
There are many disadvantages on traveling in Europe during winter – it gets really cold, daytime is shorter, the sky gets gloomy and it rains a lot, plus in Venice, there is also a risk of aqua alta too. Nevertheless, visiting the city during summer risks long queues, higher costs, and hot weather that doesn’t add well to the already packed places. But in winter, when the tourism activity is much lower, many travel sites mention that “you can have Venice all to yourself”, and it is really true.
Having looked at the weather forecast for a few days, I knew that there wouldn’t be any great chance for sunlight. Overcast skies are not every photo enthusiast’s ideal situation; but I thought that this is where Lomography triumphs over digital. One film I used is the X Tungsten – paired with my LC-Wide, cross processing it yields the purplish shade that I wanted to add atmosphere to my photos!
I used four cameras on this trip: my LC-Wide, LC-A Russia Day, Sprocket Rocket and a LomoKino loaned by my friend. It was really fun interchanging between them, not to mention their lightweight quality makes carrying them much easier!
Of the five days I spent there, Day 1 was already dark when I arrived; Day 2 it was raining; Day 3 it was foggy; Day 4 it was raining again; and finally on the day I checked out, it was sunny. It doesn’t sound great at all, but having looked back at the photos I am glad for this. Had it been sunny all the time, my photos would probably looked similar to everyone else’s.
This trip also increased my level of respect towards the power of cross processing. On the forth day I visited the island of Burano, which is famous for its colourful houses. It was drizzling and gloomy that day but I can still feel the vibrancy of the houses, which really cheered things up. When I looked back at my photos, cross processing Lomography XPro 200 has returned the colours to what I experienced that day!
I posted my photos on Facebook and those who have been there are surprised that I got into Basilica San Marco and at the top of the Campanile. They went in the summer and had to queue but the line was so long they didn’t get it. In my case, I just walked in straightaway! And they loved the empty streets too, because apparently their photos are full of tourists.
I would love to visit Venice again during Spring or the Carnivale; I’m sure it will be a totally different experience altogether! This trip also taught me something – no matter how gloomy the weather is, just keep calm and use slide films!
