A curious town that at the time of my exploration, felt like a movie set with barely any hustle and bustle. I felt like I was the star of the show just waiting for the extras to come out any minute. Hmmm… is this the Truman Show?
Milwaukee was on my list of places to see in the States, why you may ask? Well, to see my first Calatrava of course, The Milwaukee Art Museum. I booked myself a hotel for 3 days and started my urban adventure as soon as I landed. My first exploration took me not just to the old Brewery section of town. It was amazing to see all these old buildings, built out of brick straight off the yellow brick road.
I found out that Milwaukee was one of the beer capitals of the world, this became obvious when I saw all the beer factories and museums. There are four main brewery houses: Pabst, Schlitz, Miller, and Blatz. I sampled the first three and went on a tour in the Miller factory which was pretty interesting.
The next day, I thought it would be ideal to spend the morning walking through the art museum as it was freezing and windy so the less walking around outside the better! As I approached the museum, the first disappointment was that as it was so windy they had put the wings of the building down, this I could deal with but what came next was worse, there was security surrounding the building and when I inquired what was going on, they informed me that idols was having auditions in the building for the whole weekend and I would have to come back on Monday. Of course my flight out of there was on Sunday night, needless to say, I was a bit bleak. I found other ways to entertain myself and I discovered that there are loads of other museums, markets, discovery centres, and bio-diversity domes in and around Milwaukee City.
My next and last day there, I took a stroll back to the museum and as it was a sunny day, the museum wings were open and it was just beautiful, even if I couldn’t go in to the museum it was worth it to be there just to see it opened in its full glory.
So if you ever find yourself in the silent city of Milwaukee, you’ll find that there is more than meets the eye and go have a look at one of Calatravas’ masterpiece buildings even if it’s just for me!
