Hvaleyri is a flat, ear-shaped peninsula at the south shore of Hvalfjörður in Iceland. It's a perfect place to take a walk by the seaside, enjoy beautiful landscape, and observe birds.
My husband and I have been living in Iceland for five years now. My affection for this island gets stronger and stronger with each year. I want to know every single corner of it. That’s why we travel around quite often.
We visit Hvaleyri 2-3 times per year. Mostly in the summer. It isn’t far from Reykjavik, so it’s a perfect destination for a one-day trip. We packed some sandwiches, fill our thermoses, and dress for the weather. Usually we take a relaxing walk. My husband enjoys the view and fresh air. Meanwhile, I collect little stones, shells, and everything that has an interesting shape, pattern or color.
My favourite part in these trips is when we reach the tip of the peninsula. A little orange lighthouse was built there in 1948. It’s name is Hvaleyrarviti. If the weather is fine, we stay there for a while. We sit between the stones and listen to the ocean.
If you are traveling in Iceland and you have some spare time, Hvaleyri is a lovely place to visit. I won’t lie – it isn’t the most beautiful location in Iceland, but year by year we come back here to enjoy peace and tranquility.
