The Constanta Aquarium - A Great Place to Relax

If you’re ever in Constanta on a cold or gloomy day and you’re in the mood to take some photos or just relax, the Constanta Aquarium is the place to be! It is not the most glamorous or the most breathtaking place in my home town, but it’s worth visiting.

The Aquarium is the first section of the Natural Sciences Museum Complex that was opened to the public. It was inaugurated on the 1st of May 1958 and it is the first and largest Aquarium opened in Romania. It is also very well located, next to the casino, the most important landmark in Constanta (about which you can read about here).

If you want to visit the Aquarium, bear in mind that it is not at all spectacular…especially if you are used to the huge and modern aquariums from cities like Barcelona. The Constanta Aquarium has 57 tanks which host about 1300 creatures from 100 species. It has two sections: the marine section and the fresh water section.

The marine section includes species of fish and invertebrates from the Black Sea and Mediterranean Sea. The largest tank (30 cubic meters) includes the biggest collection of sturgeons famous for its scientific importance and for the longevity of the fish held in captivity (18-20 years).

The fresh water section presents species of invertebrates of fresh water, populating the pools, and coastal lakes on the sea coast and the Danube Delta waters, but also a variety of exotic fish from Asia, Africa, America, and Australia.

The general atmosphere is very relaxing: when you enter the Aquarium, you see vivid colors and very well lit tanks full of exotic fish; after this section you enter the main hall where you can see fish from the Black Sea and the Danube Delta. Here the light is very dim and all the fish move very slowly. The last section is dedicated to exotic fish…the tanks become very colorful and luminous.

All in all, I enjoyed my time spent at the Aquarium and found the whole experience very relaxing.
