Bars and Pubs: Leeds Bavarian Bierkellar

Until recently, I had only heard about the wonder that is Leeds' first-and-only German themed night out – the Bierkellar. Now that I have experienced it for myself, I will be visiting it time and time again.

Leeds Bierkellar is situated in quite a nice part of Leeds city centre, at the top end of Park Row, opposite the Town Hall. It would be quite easy to miss it if you weren’t deliberately looking for it, as from the street, it is simply one single sign, pointing you down a long staircase into the “cellar” below some other bars and restaurants, hence putting the “kellar” in Bierkellar. It is set in the vaults of an old bank so this gives it huge archways, a lovely wooden floor, and authentic cellar feeling.

I have to say that although the drinks appear pricey (£7 for a stein of beer – approx 2 pints – and a £4 returnable deposit for the glass), I didn’t find it unreasonable and all my food and drinks cost under £25 for the entire evening. The best part of an evening at Leeds Bierkellar has to be the entertainment. For laughs alone this is well worth the money I spent. There is an Oompah band who play 2 sets around 8-11pm. They are awesome, although I am not 100% convinced they are German! They have you clinking your beer steins, singing along, and despite the signs telling you not to dance on the tables, they have you spending half your evening dancing on the benches instead!

All in all it was a great night out, and no matter how old you are or what music you are into, the Bierkellar is still for you. I went with a group of work colleagues who all appreciate different things and every single one of them had a super night at Leeds Bierkellar.
