Tree Reasons to Visit the Alps: Drei Zinnen

On the edge of Italy, so far north it's almost Austria, lies one of the finest sights of the Dolomite region. The Drei Zinnen (or Tre Cime di Lavaredo, if you prefer Italian) can definitely take your breath away.

The Dolomites themselves are a pretty impressive bunch of mountains, but I think the tree peaks of the Drei Zinnen are the absolute top. They can be reached via a steep, winding road that is an adventure in itself. The area can be very foggy and cloudy, but that only adds to the sense of grandeur. The feeling of climbing up through thick fog, to suddenly see three huge pillars of stone appearing in front of you when the clouds break is something else alright. I know it left me speechless for a bit.

The surroundings of the Drei Zinnen are perfect for a relaxed day trip. The tour from the main parking lot around the peaks take about three hours or longer, if you’re stopping over at the Rifugio Locatelli for a drink or a meal with a spectacular view of the peaks.

And if rocks alone are not enough to drag you up a mountain, there are loads of pretty flowers and birds to see (and photograph!).
