A look at why a beach can be one of the most interesting places to shoot.

I’m lucky enough to live 5 minutes away from the beach in Brighton and work about 10 minutes away. Throughout the summer we often meet there at 5.31pm for cheap drinks.

Brighton has a particularly lovely backdrop as it has one pier (The Palace Pier) which is full of neon lights and is very photogenic and the other, The West Pier, is a burnt down shell of a pier which is now a massive sculpture dedicated to the Victorian life of Brighton.

The beach is a great place to shoot as you quite often get amazing light as it’s mirrored off of the water and there are no buildings or shady spots so you get amazing colour. The West Pier in Brighton is perhaps, the most photographed thing in this city. I have seen many incredible shots of it. From all angles, all lights, all tides, It always looks good. You quite often get hundreds of sparrows roosting in its twisted metal frame which looks stunning when they are all in flight.

In summer, our beach is often full of people until the early hours and it frequently reminds me of a festival field. Lots of people drinking, eating, having fun, and watching the sun set. Beaches have been used throughout history as places of recreation; I can play on the beach for hours. I’ve been lucky enough to go to many beaches all over the world. Some with sand, rocks, coral, big waves, small waves. You are always guaranteed a good time.

Beaches are also great for light painting canvasses. You get a lot of room to work in and with so many tones in the sky, you get a lot of great colours coming through.

Young, old, active, lazy all have fun at the beach. Grab yourself some drinks, an ice cream, fish and chips, and look at the mesmerizing waves crashing on the shore
