Through Berlin with Jakob Hein: the Literary Stages

A writer and a doctor, Jakob Hein has written numerous novels as well as the "Gebrauchsanweisung für Berlin" (Berlin User Guide). At the legendary "Kaffee Burger", this dynamic Berliner was the co-founder of the "Heim und Welt" reading stage, where he was been reading his texts every Sunday for around 13 years.

Publishing literature is not difficult at all, or so said a couple of plucky Berliners one day. You can’t just sit around and wait for the publishers to print it. So they stood up on a stage and simply started to read their texts out. At first, a small audience would gather and at the end of the show, a hat would be passed around, and they found that in it, there would be just enough money for them to buy a ticket home. Since then, things have changed quite a lot and the scene is now completely unmissable. Here are my recommendations:

1. Chaussee der Enthusiasten
The current most-successful reading stage takes place at the “RAW Tempel” in Friedrichshain. Kirsten Fuchs, Andreas Kampa, Jochen Schmidt, Stephan Serin, Robert Naumann, and Dan Richter bewitch their audience with texts, songs, and improvisations.

Location: Revaler Str. 99, 10245 Berlin-Friedrichshain
How to get there: S+U-Bhf. Warschauer Straße
Opening times: Thursdays at 21:00

2. Reformbühne Heim & Welt
Running since 1995, this is the oldest active show and is always held on a Sunday, right after the news. If you don’t want to bore yourself to death watching ‘Tatort’, then come down and listen to Uli Hannemann, Jakob Hein, Falko Hennig, Heiko Werning, and Jürgen Witte accompanied by a musical and a literary guest. It’s hosted in the infamous “Kaffee Burger”, which makes a great venue.

Location: Torstraße 60, 10119 Berlin-Mitte
How to get there: U2 Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz
Opening times: Sundays at 20:15
More info

3. Kantinenlesen
This is the summit of all reading stages. In the old canteen of the “Kulturbrauerei”, the ambassadors from each of the different reading stages meet to recite their best texts. It’s a good place to hunt down and discover your favourites from the reading stage.

Location: Knaackstr. 97, 10345 Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg
How to get there: U2 Eberswalder Straße
Opening times: Saturdays at 20:00
