Place de Vosges and the Parisian Sun Cycle

Place de Vosges is a beautiful square in the heart of the Parisian neighborhood of Marais. Aside from the many cafés, restaurants, galleries, museums and amazing gardens that can be found here, it is also one of the favorite places for the Parisian sun cycle (sit in a garden – have coffee – sit in the garden some more).

Place de Vosges is a beautiful square located in the heart of Marais. To get here you can use a Vélib or the Metro. The closest Metro stations are Saint-Paul, Bastille, Bréguet-Sabin or Chemin Vert.

This square with a classical French style constitutes a unique example of early 17th century architecture. It is composed of 39 (some say 36) houses with an arcade that runs the whole perimeter of the square.

Inside the square, you can find a great garden with some splendid fountains and people impersonating sunflowers.

This garden is one of the election spots of Parisians and tourists to do photosynthesis, a picnic, or perhaps, sit and enjoy the company of a friend (or a friendly book).

While walking around the square under the facades, it is possible to find several cafes/restaurants and also some art galleries with amazing and (expensive) pieces.

At the number 6 of Place de Vosges, one can visit the home of Victor Hugo, the famous author of “Les Miserables”. His home, now a museum, is open to the public free of charge.

In one of the square corners a “secret” door allows you to enter the amazing Hotel de Sully gardens. The building itself is now part of the photography museum Jeu de Paume – Hotel de Sully. And while talking about photography, one of the actual 2 lomography shops in Paris is strategically located in the Marais. It is only a 10-min walk from Place de Vosges.
