Venice and Lomography X-Pro Chrome: A Perfect Match

As soon as I stepped out of Santa Lucia station in Venice and saw the hive of activity on the waterfront, I knew which film to put in my trusty LC-A: Lomography X-Pro Chrome 100. What better film to bring out the vibrancy of this remarkable city.

The 100 ISO Chrome film is a slide film that, when cross-processed, produces a deep saturation of colours. With the bright blue skies of Venice, this was going to produce some great results. Venice is a city of canals and all the ‘traffic’ is water-going. Tourists throng the streets and narrow alleyways, and every corner reveals another lively piazza or renovated palazzo. The main thoroughfare is the famous Grand Canal. In the mornings the canal bustles with merchants delivering the day’s produce, throwing crates and boxes from boat to shore, water buses (vaporetti) ferrying people around, and water taxis looking for custom. With only two bridges to cross the Grand Canal, walking is your main mode of transport.

Piazza San Marco is the hub of Venice, with it’s lively waterfront, ornate basilica and accessible campanile. Take the elevator up the bell tower for breathtaking views over the city in azure and terracotta. Around this piazza is also where you will find plenty of stalls for souvenir shopping and colourful snapping.

The X-Pro Chrome film enjoys a lot of light to really make the colours pop. It is equally dramatic, however, if you can create a scene with a sharp contrast of light and dark. It is a fun film to experiment with and I often get “wow” in response to the images produced with it. Combining this with the beauty of Venice was a real treat.
