Visiting the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin

I was visiting and taking photos in the Brandenburg Gate area of Berlin, one of the highlights of the city where street artists and tourists go everyday. This is also one of the most important city monuments around the world.

The Brandenburg Gate, or Brandenburger Tor in German, was one of the entry gates to Berlin and one of the symbols of the city. It wasn’t a triumphal arch, it was an entrance to the “New Berlin”.

Brandenburg Gate is located in Paris Square at the end of Unter den Linden. It marks the start of the Tiergarten Park, and was built between 1788 and 1791 during the reign of Frederick William II of Prussia, and was designed similarly to the Acropolis of Athens.

Finally (and jumping over history), we have to know that in the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961, the gate was left in no man’s land, without access from either side, so only guards or RDA guests had special access. In 1991, after the reunification of Germany, the Gate was restored. In January 2001, there was a complete restoration of the door, which was covered for 22 months.

On November 9th, 2009, on the 20th anniversary of the Wall, there were different shows in the Brandenburg Gate. We can all remember the U2 concert where lots of people took part under the rain.

The Gate is now a symbol, and it’s very important and visited by tourists, it’s maybe the main symbol of the city (as Big Ben is in London, or Eiffel Tower in Paris), but it’s also an important point for the Germans!
