Aux Folies & Café Chéri(e): Two Fun Spots to Hang Out at Night in Paris

Two of my favorite places to hang out at night in Paris are just a short distance away from each other. And both deserve a visit!

Belleville is a multicultural neighborhood in the Northeast of Paris. Just as you walk out of metro Belleville, you will spot the café Aux Folies (8 rue de Belleville 75020 Paris, Metro Belleville). It is a former café-theatre which counted amongst its customers such notables as Edith Piaf and Maurice Chevalier, who both lived in the neighborhood. You can still see traces from its theater days the deco, but nowadays it is better known for being a friendly, inexpensive bar where both locals from this multicultural neighborhood and bohemian artists from the nearby squats hang out for drinks. And all the rest of the people who enjoy a good cheap pint or their killer mojito, too. It has a huge terrace in front and is probably my favorite place for a cocktail just after work. The service is very friendly and terribly efficient. It’s open until 1am.

Just a short stroll away is the Café Chéri(e) (44 bd de la Villette, 75019 Paris, Metro Belleville or Colonel Fabien). Like the Aux Folies, it also has a big terrace in front with interesting patio furniture (the tables and chairs have probably been bought from an old primary school). And it is also cheap and friendly! And it offers a very good mojito too! This café-bar is open until a bit later (2am) and usually has good DJ sets playing electro, rock, funk, hip hop, indie dance, jazz, etc. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, so it’s a good place to start a night out. Or, if you can’t stay out too late, at least you feel you did something with your night! It also houses art exhibits on the first floor.
