Roxborough State Park: Enjoy Colorado's Finest Just Outside Denver!

Roxborough State Park is 3,339 acres of pristine nature just southwest of Denver. This may be a small state park by Colorado standards, but it's packed with dramatic red rock formations, plants, and wildlife. Sweeping meadows and carefully placed scenic overlooks create beautiful photo ops that would lure any Lomographer.

Just a short drive southwest of Denver, you’ll find Roxborough State Park. In a city surrounded by majestic opportunities to escape the city, it would be easy to miss this relatively small state park or to write it off as “too close” to feel like getting away. That would be a mistake!

Although thankfully not as famous, Roxborough is reminiscent of Colorado Springs’ Garden of the Gods with its sharp red rock fins jutting into the sky. These geological wonders rise high above the foothills and are easily appreciated from most locations within the park.

The trails are well kept and easily accessed from the parking lot, and there is an air conditioned ranger station with clean restrooms and helpful rangers. Hikes range in distance and difficulty, but all are fairly easy by Colorado standards. One of the overlooks can be reached by walking only 100 feet from the visitor’s center.

For the more adventurous, there’s a series of hikes that wind through the meadows and trails with minor changes in elevation. Wildlife is abundant, with sightings of mule deer, black bears, and a variety of predatory birds being common for those with good timing and a careful eye.

The scenery definitely changes throughout the year. Winter brings a photogenic dusting of snow to the red rocks fins, and the cool air makes everything appear more crisp and clear. It’s a favorite time of the year for photographers to gather and shoot the setting sun against such a dramatic backdrop.

So in summary, Roxborough State Park may seem too good to be true with it’s picturesque scenery and short drive from Denver, but it’s not! Your visits will be richly rewarded.
