Escape from Sydney

Without bragging (ok, maybe a little), the NSW coastline has many amazing beaches, coves, cliffs and crashing waves – basically you are never short of an amazing ocean view. However it can be hard to remember that when you're stuck in Sydney. Yes, yes, the city is situated on the beautiful Sydney Harbour but it is also among the momentous tangle of city traffic, noise, and crowds. Let’s escape from the city!

Kiama is a popular seaside town for many Sydney-siders wanting to escape the busy city beaches and relax away from it all. It has the convenience of retail stores, quirky gift shops, great cafes, restaurants and pubs, with the added tranquil scenery, sights, walks and numerous parks and beaches.

The name Kiama is from the aboriginal word Kiaram-a, to which some sources give the meaning “Where the sea makes a noise” as reference to the famous Kiama Blowhole.

The Kiama blowhole and lighthouse above, on any given summer day, will see hundreds of visitors however, it only ‘blows’ when there is swell! This doesn’t stop the visitors waiting for it…sometimes for hours! The best days for the blowhole are the stormy ones – so I think it’s the locals who see it at its best. ;)

At the right time of year, you’ll also see migrating whales – from many points along the coast!

Great coffee can be found Café Parkview and Short Black Coffee whilst all your organic food needs are at Heart and Sol. If you love those little hideaway shops, see Jennies Book Nook and all the little shops along Collins Lane.

Swimming is best at Kendalls Beach for families while Bombo or the surf beach are best for surfing. For a cheap beer, head to the Grand Hotel (famous old pub) or Friday Night Cocktails – Blue Diamond it is. Despite its fantastic services, Kiama really retains all the qualities of a quaint seaside village which makes perfect for that ‘escape’ we all need every now and then.

I work in Sydney, but love ‘escaping’ from home at the end of the day back to Kiama. Bliss.
