Shooting Out of the Car Window

Recently, being asked to shoot ten rolls of film around Leeds in under a week seemed like an impossible task. When it got to the last day and a half and I had more than 3 rolls of film left and had to be at work - I got a bit desperate! I had Dave drive me around Leeds and instead of shooting from the hip, I was shooting with my arm and camera stuck out the window.

I love Leeds and living here has been brilliant for the last 7 years. Sometimes however, I become complacent and think every other city is bigger and better than this one. Doing this project in January, particularly the driving around the city centre shooting reminded me of all the great buildings we have here in our city centre and it was a proper little urban adventure. We started right outside our own home.

Then we drove through the student area near the university, shooting out of the window all the way on our urban adventure.

Then we ended up on a very industrial road, where we stopped for lunch at a Chinese restaurant. Again due to the time pressures we continued to shoot here as well.

Then it was time to head through the city centre and around the town hall building, which has changed loads since I moved here and this was a great opportunity to have a proper, but fast look around at the things I often miss out on.

After this, it was time for me to get a lift to work for the afternoon, but there was still time to finish off some rolls on the way through Harehills to the probation centre I work at.

To say that I was stressed about getting this finished would be a massive understatement. I was then very stressed that my dashed shots out of the car window wouldn’t be very good. I was sooooo happy when I got the results back and I think this type of urban adventure, and shooting without looking so much could work well in any city really. So, what are you waiting for? Get out there and give it a try!
