The Championships, Wimbledon 2011

The green grass, white clothing and classic colours - dark green and purple. The only Grand Slam event played on grass. The 125th Championships in Wimbledon 2011!

How old is the Wimbledon Championships?

The 2011 Wimbledon Championships is the 125th time that the all-England Lawn Tennis Club has hosted The Championships since the first tournament in 1877. Today, the Wimbledon Championships remain the only Grand Slam event still played on grass.

Wimbledon is proud of its traditions. The green grass, white clothing and the club colour – dark green and purple build this classic sporting heritage. The finest players from over 60 countries competed in the championship events in 2011, attracting an attendance of around 450,000 people. Through print, radio, and television, the championships have been followed by hundreds of millions audiences around the world.

In addition to the tennis matches, ‘the queue’ for tickets is another classic event during the championships. Wimbledon remains one of the very few major sporting events where people can still buy premium tickets on the day of play. The endless queuing for tickets and camping in tents have become a spectacle every summer in Wimbledon.
