Local Flavor: A Symbol of Love in Agra

When in Agra, the number one thing on the to-do list is to visit the Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

Every year, millions of tourists arrive at Agra just to marvel at the sight of the Taj Mahal. It is not only the fine Mughal architecture that attracts the people. The story behind the Taj chronicles the dedication and love of the Emperor, Shah Jahan’s love for his Queen, Mumtaz Mahal. The construction of this extravagant monument is a promise made by the Emperor to his Queen at her deathbed. The mausoleum took more than 20 years to complete.

Watching sunrise at the Taj Mahal is a highly-recommended activity. At dawn, the Taj appears greyish white and turns slightly pinkish as the sun rises. But do note you have to be up very early to queue for the tickets. Within the Taj’s premise, take a closer look at the thousands of intricately crafted coloured gem stones which are embedded into the white marble. The artisans must have spent countless hours just to make a single piece. The Taj Mahal might be an extravagant monument but how can true love ever be measured.
