If you feel like escaping from the busy Dartmouth shops and river, then I recommend a ride along the coast to Paignton on what is described as "one of the finest heritage steam railway journeys in Europe".
The Dartmouth Railway actually runs from Kingswear, which is just a short ferry ride across the River Dart from Dartmouth itself. Then you can board the spectacular steam train which will take you all the way to Paignton. It is not only the train that is worthy of a few pictures, the platform is like a step back in time and you really feel transported back into history.
The way that all the original signage and advertising has been kept intact is amazing and well worthy of a look around. The train carriages themselves are like something from an old film and each one has a name. Some of them even have the original booths for you to go in with the glass sliding doors to separate you from the rest of the train.
The journey takes you through gorgeous woodland and then along a stunning coastal path where you can see the sea, cliff tops, beach huts and vast sandy beaches. It feels like being abroad, especially as we were fortunate enough to go on a particularly sunny day.
