A Final Goodbye: Bukit Timah Railway Station

Bukit Timah Railway Station opened in 1915 and has been in operation 'til the 30th of June 2011. After the 'cease operation' announcement was made, dozens of people and photographers flocked to this place to take pictures.

Before the causeway was in operation, railway train service was the only transport to travel between Singapore and Malaysia. The tracks ran from tank line (which was later moved to Tanjong Pagar train station) to Malaysia. The station also acts as a freight interchange from 1965 to the early 1990s allowing passenger embarkation and disembarkation and freight loading services. However, it was later not allowed to do so and the train passed by the station instead.

How the key token look like

The interesting part is you actually can get to see the exchange of the key tokens taken place. This acts as a proof of authority for the train to proceed further. However, you will not get to see this sight as the train operation has ceased following the Tanjong Pagar train station cessation on the 30th of June 2011.

It’s sad as the train will no longer start its journey from Tanjong Pagar train station and travelling past Bukit Timah railway station. Both sites have been around for so many years to witness the growth of Singapore. On the 27th of May 2011, URA has officially announced that Bukit Timah Railway station will be conserved.

For those who are interested to drop by and take a picture please do so. It’s really a good place to take pictures which I have enjoyed myself. The train ride to Malaysia is now available from woodlands checkpoint effective from the 1st of Jul 2011.
