Constanta is one of the most important cities in Romania. It has a population of approximately 310,000 inhabitants, it hosts the biggest port of the Black Sea and the largest seaside resort in Romania. Constanta is my hometown and is the most impressive during the summer! Its the time when the colors of the city really shine and Constanta immediately comes to life.
Constanta is situated in the South-East of Romania, in the historical region of Dobrogea. It is the oldest city in Romania, dating since 657 b.Ch.: then it was a Greek colony named Tomis. In 71 b.Ch. Tomis was conquered by the Romans, who changed its name to Constantiana. It was here that the Roman poet Ovidius was exiled and spent the last 8 years of his life. During the 13th century, the city flourished under the influence of Italian merchants.
Because of its rich and long history, Constanta hosts many archeological remains of its diverse inhabitants. The old part of town is extremely beautiful, with impressive old buildings, museums, statues and archeological sites. The most important is probably the Casino, which over the years, has become the symbol of my hometown.
Apart from this, other important places to visit in Constanta are: The Dolphinarium, The Aquarium, The Observatory, The Art Museum, The Museum of Popular Art, The Romanian Navy Museum, The Roman Mosaic, The House with Lions, The Mosque, The History Museum and The “Ion Jalea” Museum.
If you’re not that fond of history and museums, you might enjoy going to the beach on one of the local places or in the Mamaia Resort. You won’t be disappointed! And if you love parks, Constanta has a few: the Tabacarie Park, the House of Culture Park and the Archeological Park are the most important. And if you take a stroll in Tabacarie Park, you will find quite a few attractions: there’s the City Park Mall, the biggest extreme sports complex in Romania called Gravity Park and a very unique wooden church.
So you might think that Constanta is quite a fun place to be in. During the summer, Constanta will keep you entertained with all sorts of concerts, fancy night clubs, water sports and lots of interesting places to visit. The general atmosphere is very joyful and relaxing, especially if you come here on holiday!
However, living in Constanta is another thing. It’s quite difficult to find a proper job and you’ll get easily bored of the small number of good quality places to spend your free time such as bars and night clubs. Constanta is also short on professional photo labs: so if you want to develop black and white film or want to scan some 120mm film you’ll find that there are any places here where you can do so.
All in all, Constanta is a city with great potential, with a very nice vibe especially during the summer; it’s a place that boasts of history and unique and interesting places to visit. It’s definitely the perfect place for a summer holiday!
