An Urban Adventure To Get Arty Inspiration

Every city has that little hidden gem, a little neighbourhood that keeps on inspiring and surprising us. A neighbourhood where there's always a photo waiting to be taken. This time I'll tell you about a little place in Manchester called the Northern Quarter.

First, a little geography lesson with the help of Wiki: “Manchester is a city and metropolitan borough of Greater Manchester, England. In 2009, its population was estimated to be 483,800, making it the seventh-most populous local authority district in England. Manchester lies within one of the UK’s largest metropolitan areas; the metropolitan county of Greater Manchester had an estimated population of 2,600,100, the Greater Manchester Urban Area a population of 2,240,230, and the Larger Urban Zone around Manchester, the second-most-populous in the UK, had an estimated population in the 2004 Urban Audit of 2,539,100.The demonym of Manchester is Mancunian.” (source: Wikipedia)

Thanks to the industrial revolution, which was big business in Manchester, the Northern quarter has a lot of warehouse style buildings made of bricks. It feels very industrial and that’s why many artists like to leave their mark in this area. Even Banksy has found his way around the Northern Quarter. You can find a very early piece of his work on an electricity building.

And where there’s artists, there’s art. So you can find nice small galleries and arty book shops. Whether you’re a photographer, illustrator or graphic designer, you will always be able to find something that suits you. Add a few nice coffee places and there you go; you have found yourself an area in which you can entertain yourself, meet other artists and get inspired by its industrial surroundings.

So next time you think of Manchester, don’t just think about the pubs, the football, the shops and the nightlife… think about the inspiration you may get from those old buildings. Once you open your eyes properly for all of Manchester’s hidden beauty, you will never look at it the same way again.

Is the banksy piece his? or just a rip off? Invader still has some work attatched to various buildings around the northern quarter, there are maps on his site giving the exact locations x

@lu_lu Well, in Manchester they seem to think so. They build a whole frame around it to protect it!
