Nuns at the beach? Seriously? Has the world gone mad?
Everyone deserves a vacation once in a while – even the ever-dedicated nuns from the Benedictine Monastery of our church. Yearly, they are given only one weekend off from all the work that they do. They can go out of the convent and go wherever they want to go. Kind of a tough life, huh?
Back in the summer of 2009, we decided to treat them to a weekend of fun at the beach; lots of sea water and sun! We brought them along on our trip to Anilao, Batangas (Philippines). Of course I couldn’t pass up such a rare opportunity to take pictures of nuns at the beach. So I carried my LC-A+ while walking along the shallow waters, snap snap, snap. I didn’t have a Krab case yet back then, so I did my best to be careful and not drop my precious camera. And I was sure that the nuns were praying hard that I not drop it. :)
It was a fun experience. It was my first time seeing people swimming while wearing habits. We even heard remarks from some of the other beach visitors that the nuns looked kind of like penguins under the hot sun. But the sisters didn’t mind, they were having so much fun especially during our boat tour. One thing I noticed was that they savored every minute of the trip and they didn’t let any opportunity go to waste, since, after all, they can only do this once a year.
I’ll surely bring my Krab case the next time we hit the beach with them again. :)
