The Fantastic Facto...I mean, São Cristóvão Market

An exotic place that everyone (foreigners, Brazilians from the south, from the north and specially from the northeast) should visit.

As you enter this old pavilion, located in the district of São Cristóvão in the city of Rio de Janeiro, you can already breathe in the culture that comes from the northeast. The smell of strong, spicy, food mixed with the sound of hillbilly guitars, concertinas, and musical triangles make you get into the “arretado” (word from the northeast dialect that means, in this case, great) rhythm of this people.

For many years, this is a meeting place for workers that come from the Northeast of Brazil to work in the city of Rio de Janeiro, together with your families, friends, and colleagues, to do what they love: dance, eat and chat.

Today, this great center of tradition is always full, be it day or night. Needless to say, this place is highly photogenic, right? No matter if the weather is good or bad, everything can be recorded by our Lomos.

So put your favorite camera in your bag (do not forget the large amount of film) and go running to this place. If you are not from Rio, when you get here, be sure to visit this place.

“Exaltação ao Nordeste
Eita,Nordeste da peste,
Mesmo com toda sêca
Abandono e solidão,
Talvez pouca gente perceba
Que teu mapa aproximado
Tem forma de coração.
E se dizem que temos pobreza
E atribuem à natureza,
Contra isso,eu digo não.
Na verdade temos fartura
Do petróleo ao algodão.
Isso prova que temos riqueza
Embaixo e em cima do chão.
Procure por aí a fora
“Cabra” que acorda antes da aurora
E da enxada lança mão.
Procure mulher com dez filhos
Que quando a palma não alimenta
Bebem leite de jumenta
E nenhum dá pra ladrão
Procure por aí a fora
Quem melhor que a gente canta,
Quem melhor que a gente dança
Xote,xaxado e baião.
Procure no mundo uma cidade
Com a beleza e a claridade
Do luar do meu sertão."
