The Lloyd’s Building

The Lloyd’s Building is a very unusual and striking piece of architecture in the City of London.

The Lloyd’s Building is the home of the famous “Lloyd’s of London”. They’re best known for insuring almost anything. One of their most notable claims was against the sinking of the Titanic.

The building was designed by architect Richard Rodgers and completed construction in 1986. The most obvious feature of the design is that it appears to have been built inside out! The exterior of the building is covered by pipes, conduits, lifts, and staircases. The idea was that this design allowed for a more uncluttered space on the interior. To me, the building appears as if it’s straight out of some science fiction movie. In fact, this building has been featured in numerous TV shows and films.

Unfortunately, you can’t go inside the building unless you have business there. The good news is that, once a year, Lloyd’s usually participates in the “Open House London” weekend where visitors will get the rare opportunity to explore the amazing interior of the building. In the meantime, the exterior makes for a truly unique architectural photo shoot.

I have been inside building once, and I can assure you that it's cool and stunning inside as well. Definitely worth a visit during open house :)
