Day Tour of the Blue Mountains

If you are in Australia, be sure to visit the famous Blue Mountains. The Blue Mountains offer spectacular scenery, plant life and wildlife. Check out the amazing Blue Mountains on a full day tour from Sydney. See the Three Sisters rock formation, hike at Wentworth Falls, take in the spectacular lookouts, and see kangaroos in their natural habitat.

The name Blue Mountains, however, was preferred and is derived from the blue tinge the range takes on when viewed from a distance. The tinge is caused by mie scattering which occurs when incoming ultraviolet radiation is scattered by particles within the atmosphere creating a blue-greyish colour to any distant objects, including mountains and clouds. It is widely, but incorrectly, believed that this is created by light reflecting off vapours from eucalyptus leaves. The high abundance of volatile terpenoids, produced and emitted by coniferous species, provide the atmospheric material which can scatter the incoming UV radiation.

The Blue Mountains, located immediately to the west of the sprawling metropolian area that is Sydney, is one of the most accessible areas of (relatively unspoilt) highland natural beauty in New South Wales, Australia. Although not particularly high as a mountain range, the Blue Mountains is nonetheless renowned for its majestic scenery of a unique kind, for its cultural attractions and for its relatively tranquil, alternative mode of life.

Travelers visiting Sydney are often faced with the dilemma of how best to get to the mountains to spend a day or a couple of days. It is quite possible to visit for a day, and to see many of the main sights. The temperature can be up to 10°C colder than on the coast during the day, and even colder overnight.

How to get there?
Many tour companies operate one-day or longer, to the Blue Mountains from Sydney. A number of companies operate chartered tours that offer tour guides and coaches with modern facilities (toilets, air conditioning). It is advisable to take this kind of tour bus rather than taking your own car as you might be exhausted during the tour.

The most popular attraction in the mountains is Echo Point at Katoomba, a major lookout with incredible views of the Jamison Valley and the Three Sisters. There’s also an information centre here with displays about the environment of the area, so it’s a good place to start your visit to the mountains. Do bring extra slide films when it is sunny. You may love the view of the clouds from the top of the mountain.

At the end of the tour, you get to ride on the ferry to Darling Harbour. You will get the chance to shoot some pictures of the Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House. There are lovely birds flying around. Make sure your camera is always handy.
