Celebrating Chinese New Year!

Chinese New Year – often called Chinese Lunar New Year – is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. It's also called the "Spring Festival" (春节).

Chinese New Year is celebrated in countries and territories with significant Chinese populations, such as Mainland China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Macau, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and also in Chinatowns elsewhere.

It runs from the first day of the Lunar calendar to the fifteenth day. Families gather for annual reunion dinners, usually on the eve of the first day of the Lunar New Year. My family is no exception! On New Year’s Eve, we had a steamboat dinner and it was one of the rare occasions where I get to enjoy abalone and pacific clams! After dinner, some of my cousins came over and we chatted and watched TV together.

On the first day of the New Year, my paternal relatives will gather at my grandmother’s place and spend the day together. As I had relatives in Malaysia, my family and I travel to Malaysia every Lunar New Year to pay a visit to my grandma and my uncles.

And over the next few days of the holidays, I visited friends and had a lot of feasting going on!
