The Sunglasses Machine in Munich

One of the reasons why I love Munich is the sunglasses machine. Yes, it really is a machine where you can get sunglasses from - and for only 2x2 Euros!

You can find the sunglasses machine at the Leopoldstraße between the two tube stops “Münchner Freiheit” and “Giselastraße”. It is located in front of an optician’s shop called “Optik Hartog” and yes, it follows the same principles as a normal chewing gum machine does: you put money in (2×2 Euros) and you can open one of the drawers and take sunglasses out. The optician’s shop looks after the sunglasses machine and takes care of the refilling; it normally also puts a free postcard inside the sunglasses drawer which shows the sunglasses machine. :)

I often have friends who come and visit me in Munich, so I always start off my personal sightseeing tour around Munich by taking them to “Münchner Freiheit” and giving them sunglasses from the sunglasses machine as a present. Sometimes the sunglasses look ridiculously funny on your face, but sometimes they also look that good that they’ll become your favourite sunglasses ever.

The only thing which you have to consider before using the sunglasses machine: it only takes 2-Euro-coins, so make sure you have enough coins with you before going to the machine. :)

I must have walked past this machine when I was on holiday there. Never saw it! I have a soft spot for Munich as that's where I bought my first film camera, the Diana Mini :-)
