London Hit List #9 The London Zoo

The London Zoo is located in the north of Regent’s Park, near Regent’s Canal and some of the animal pens back onto the Canal. It is very popular, especially for families with young children. On the weekends there can be long queues for tickets. As it is quite old, being first opened in 1828, there are a lot of very cool buildings. The giraffe enclosure was built in 1837 and is still in use, which is rather amazing considering the changes in animal care over the past 174 years! The 1920s Art Deco Berthold Lubetkin penguin pool is also really cool, although now the penguins have moved to a new larger enclosure. And if you aren’t interested in architecture… the first Harry Potter movie was filmed there – the scene where Harry talks to the snake when they go to the zoo for Dudley’s birthday. Animals, architecture, Harry Potter…well worth a visit even if it might seem a bit unprepossessing from the outside!
