The Line of the Times!

Greenwich Park & Observatory... GMT ring a bell?

Ever wonder what dictates the times zones of the world? Bet you didn’t know it all happens at the Greenwich observatory where the longitude is measured and the zones are set. In technical terms (from the BBC) : Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) is the time measured on the Earth’s zero degree line of longitude, or meridian. This runs from the North Pole to the South Pole, passing through the Old Royal Observatory in the London suburb of Greenwich. So basically, we have the chance to actually stand right on the time line! How cool is that?!

Apart from this, there is a massive park overlooking the city of London plus a observatory with a camera obscura and where you can find interestng things like this ancient rock which is over 4.5 billion years old – it’s the oldest thing you’ll ever touch!
