Located just off busy Carnaby Street is my little food heaven, Ganton Street, it is the food bit of this cool and trendy shopping area. Carnaby's 35 Independent restaurants and bars offer over 15 types of cuisines. Fortunately for me, my three favorite eating places are located just meters away from each other on Ganton Street.
Lets start with Mother Mash (26 Ganton Street). This place specializes in freshly-made potato mash (the recipe for it was perfected by the owner’s mother, hence the name) and a selection of bangers and pie. Order in three easy steps: choose your mash, sausages/pie and gravy. Simple and quick. The simplicity of the menu is echoed by the restaurant’s interior. This is the place where I take all my foreign friends to taste that infamous English dish, the meat pie.
Moving on next door, is The Diner (18 Ganton Street). Oh, what can be better than a big ol’ American burger on a Sunday afternoon?! Burgers, meatloaf, chili con carne, apple pie, and milkshakes, all American favorites are present. Try the California Burger with Monterey Jack Cheese and guacamole and my all-time favorite cheese fries. Kitschy decor, a 50s soundtrack, friendly staff and hefty American food. But be warned, this is not a place to visit if you’re on a diet.
And across is Cha Cha Moon (15/21 Ganton Street) a fast casual Asian fusion noodle bar. Cha Cha Moon offers a wide selection of noodle dishes from around Asia. Try everyone’s favorite Singapore fried noodle, the chicken dumplings (the best I ever had) and the very refreshing Hong Kong milk tea. Favored by my mates and me for a quick bite before heading for a workshop over at the Lomography Gallery Store. The long shiny wooden tables and smooth lighting makes it one of my most-loved places to photograph.
