Carnival Of The Grotesque: LCG London Guide

I like myself a good bit of human anatomy. My friends might say I have an insatiable hunger for flesh even. I prefer to call it a perversion. So, now that you know, I bet you’re wondering: “just where does Willyboy go to scratch this puerile itch?” Well my lomographic friends, read on and all shall be revealed.

Deep in the dankest, darkest recesses of London’s Square Mile resides a collection so spine chillingly gruesome it’ll have your sex organs shriveling up in fear. Its name? The Hunterian Museum.

Housed on the upper floor of the slice-and-dice factory that is London’s Royal College of Surgeons, the Hunterian collection displays 3,500 natural specimens suspended and floating rather eerily in glass canisters backlit in luminous green. Donated in 1799 by a certain John Hunter, this macabre collection of the deformed and the freakish gets Willyboy salivating every time. His favourites? The 8 ft 2 in skeleton of “Irish giant” Charles Byrne of course, who drank himself to death following the trappings of fame at the age of 22. Something Willyboy is growing well acquainted with as his Lomohome begins to bloat and swell in size.

That’s not all one must see however. The bottled sloth and hedgehog foetuses look like a delicacy best reserved for dinner at The Ritz, while the dissected faces make for a pleasant dessert. Perhaps the best thing about the Hunterian Museum is that access to all this is free. A damn site more cost effective than trapping, maiming and eating your own human specimens found trawling the streets of London.

So as a final addendum to all you hungry lomographers out there I certainly suggest heading down to the Royal College of Surgeons, if only at the very least in an attempt to get your Diana F+ grafted onto your groin.

Luckily the Lomo doctor at Lomography Gallery Store Soho is in close proximity to make any corrective procedures.
