The Salar de Uyuni

The Salar de Uyuni is the world's largest salt flat, it is located in southwest Bolivia. The Salar is part of the Altiplano (Spanish for high plain) of Bolivia Andes, and is elevated 3,650 meters above the mean sea level. Located near to the border between Bolivia and Chile, this huge salt flat has approximately 8.300 km², which means it is bigger than Titicaca Lake.

I once traveled to the Salar de Uyuni. It really is a fantastic and impressive place. It seems like a place of another planet. The Salar has salt everywhere wherever you look, it’s all white. Everything there is about salt and there is also a hotel made of salt. I think more impressive than hundreds of miles of pure salt, are the “Islas” (islands). I mean, in that immensity of salt, sometimes appears a piece of earth and rocks, surrounded by salt on all sides.

The most famous island is “Isla Del Pescado” (island of fish). It is named that way because of its shape. It is a surreal place, because the island is full of giant cactus (some cactus are over a thousand years), has a fish shape and is surrounded by salt on all sides, until the horizon. It is a place that’s really worth a visit at least once in your life for its exotic and natural beauty.
