Jalan Petaling, Malaysia (Chinatown)

Jalan Petaling is the famous Chinatown in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Its unique Chinese community atmosphere and charms draw tons of visiting tourists everyday.

Jalan Petaling is situated at the heart of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In the 80s, Jalan Petaling has an eclectic mix of shops, brothels, and gambling dens and is bustling with activities. Although some buildings had been renovated or demolished to keep up with changing times, there are still some traditional, old-style shop houses. The new Jalan Petaling is still busy and has transformed into an alternative “shoppers’ paradise”.

The transformation is because it is now selling various types of counterfeit branded goods such as clothes, shoes, watches, and bags. Due to the large varieties of goods on sale, it is able to attract a lot of customers. The vendors will quote sky high prices, as a smart consumer, one should always bargain or else one’s wallet will suffer.

As early as 6 or 7 am, shops are selling breakfast, and the vegetable and fruit market is also open. Other stalls are also open for business in the morning.

Jalan Petaling also has some traditional and famous food outlets. For example: A restaurant that claimed to have pioneered the stir fried Hokkien Prawn Noodle dish, decades old wanton noodles shop, pig’s tail porridge stall in the market, and the popular and crowded LuoHanGuo herbal tea stall. In recent years, many more new cooked food stalls had been added in the area.

When night falls, various stalls and vendors will “occupy” Jalan Petaling by placing their tables, chairs and wares onto the street as the street is closed to traffic at night. Jalan Petaling is even busier at night, one can see a lot of foreigners chilling out and having a few drinks. There are also food stalls that operate only during the night such as BBQ seafood stalls, cuttlefish vegetable delicacy etc.

Jalan Petaling and its surrounding streets are full of cultural charms, most of the buildings such as tea houses, Chinese book stores, pubs and Bed & Breakfast etc. still retained the vintage architectural designs of the 70s and 80s.
