The Annual Dartmouth Regatta

These are the details of my favourite place in 2010 to take photos and practice with lomography. It was also the place where I first used slide film, redscale film and my Supersampler.

The Dartmouth regatta takes place in Dartmouth, UK every year over the August bank holiday weekend. Dartmouth is a fairly small coastal town in the south of England situated on the mouth of the river Dart. I visited the regatta in 2010 with my parents and my fiancé for my Dad’s 60th birthday. There’s definitely loads to see and do, and most importantly, plenty of opportunities to take photos.

We were very lucky when we visited Dartmouth as the weather was beautiful especially for the UK. Hotels do fill up fairly quickly in the town centre so it is worth booking well in advance. There are however, plenty of regular bus journeys from out of town for each day of the regatta.

The festival/event is largely a place where people with boats come to display them and meet like minded people. In addition to that, there is a lot to see and do, although not everything has to do with boats; the highlight for me was the row boat tug-of-war.

During the long weekend there is loads of stuff to do for children and adults, including chalk graffiti, competitions, and food tasting. The main events however include displays by sea rescue teams, a Red Arrows plane demonstration and a £25,000 fireworks display. These for me were the definite highlights of the trip. Never before have I seen fireworks shaped like a big pink heart. The whole town seems to come to life for the regatta with music in the bandstand in the park, a huge market tent in a field and a funfair at the carpark.

In addition to all these, there are the normal activities which Dartmouth has to offer such as boat hire, beautiful independent shops and old steam trains. I love Dartmouth as a place anyway but I certainly recommend visiting for the regatta as there is so much more to see and do, and once you get there all the shows and things are free! A great place for lomographers.
