Recently my girlfriend invited me to spend New Year's holidays in the north of Russia, in Severodvinsk. I have never been there and I was so glad to visit it. We bought tickets, brandy, and warm sweaters.
Severodvinsk received city status in 1938. At the beginning, only shipbuilders lived there. For a long time Severodvinsk was closed to all people, except citizens who worked in it. The Soviet Union’s first nuclear submarine “Leninsky Komsomol” was built here in 1957 and at the beginning of the 1980s, the world’s largest submarine, “Typhoon class submarine”, was also built here, which was later recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Earlier, the main factory (Northern Machine Building Enterprise-SEVMASH), built about 4 submarines per year. But now only one in two years. The shipyard is situated in Yagry Island. It is far from the city center. The island is located in the White Sea. Here you can understand why the sea is “white”, it is difficult to differentiate the sea from the sky in winter. The sea is rather cold but the townspeople like to swim there, especially in July. There is a city beach equipped with all the necessary things. Practically all buildings in Severodvinsk are modern and simple in their architecture.
