New York, I Love You

New York City - many dream about, but few get to live here. There are a million different things to see and do, and just as many ways to experience living in the city. These are a few of my favorite shots of the city from the short time I've lived here.

Trying to submit a location piece on New York City is a daunting task. How can I possibly show all the different facets of the city – everything that makes NYC unique and spectacular? I’ve resigned myself to the fact that there’s no way I can possibly accomplish this task, so instead, I’m going to show just a sliver of what living here has been like (since I got my lomo that is).

Moving here was something I always dreamed about, because in a lot of ways, everything in New York is larger than life. Something as simple as graffiti on a wall is magnified. Everything seems unique and extraordinary. Now I’m sure that New Yorkers who’ve lived here all their lives may disagree, and even I find myself walking around in a daze at times. But it usually only takes something very small to remind me that I live in a city people flock to, a city people dream about, and a city people despise. This small thing can be Washington Square Park on a sunny day, the Flatiron on a cloudy day, or the guy dressed strangely with a bunch of balloons in Union Square. Usually it’s a random conversation with a stranger that only seems to happen here and nowhere else in the world.

Sure, New York has landmarks that everyone knows about: Times Square, Empire State Building, Brooklyn Bridge, the list could easily go on. But one of the greatest things about living in New York is these places simply become the backdrop of your life. And sometimes you notice them, most times you don’t, but New York will always be there to snap you out of it when you start to forget you live somewhere truly remarkable.

Lucky you!! I got to go there twice when I lived in Clifton Park, NY, but I wish I could go again just to capture it all... btw I love your closing sentence!

Great article! It reminded me of the few months I spent in NYC a few years ago, living in Chinatown/lower east side. I totally agree with everything that you wrote. Thank you for bringing my NYC memories and feelings back!
