Yonge-Dundas Square, the Heart of the City

Want to be the center of attention? Yonge-Dundas Square is the place to be. It is literally the heart of the city and wouldn’t be mistaken for anything other. Everyone congregates here, no matter what the season. It’s a great place to meet and see friendlies, not-so-friendlies, and the occasional flashmob.

The Yonge-Dundas Square in Toronto is like Times Square in New York, but less obnoxious. The massive, towering billboards are definitely an indication of the Square, but there are also lots of free events, concerts, and even films in the summer time. Events like Serenades in the Square and Arts At The Heart keep the energy going here. Or, you could just grab ice cream from the nearby Marble Slab, and take a seat at the Square. It is especially great for listening to the resident father-son drum duo, admiring the fake Elvises and Batmans, or just people-watching.

Right by the Square is also one of two scramble intersections in the downtown core (the other being a few blocks north at Bloor). It’s quite a sight to see when all the traffic lights turn red, all the pedestrian lights turn into a little walking man, and everyone literally scrambles. It’s a free for all! But you have to be careful sometimes, especially when you’re walking diagonally across the intersection. I’ve had a few bump-ins with some not-so-happy folks, but nonetheless, everyone should experience the scramble, at least once in their lifetime.

Because Yonge-Dundas Square is a public venue, you never know what could happen here. One year after the death of the King of Pop (R.I.P. Michael Jackson!), I got notice of flashmobs to happen at a few random locations around Toronto. I got my camera, rushed out the door and waited around Yonge-Dundas Square. Next thing I knew, everyone around me (and I mean EVERYONE) broke out into the trademark “Beat It” dance number. It was absolutely amazing.
