Selmun - Perfect for that Lazy Sunday Afternoon Walk

Sundays in Malta, especially in winter (when hitting the beach is not an option), can turn out to be quite a bit of a drag. You can’t shop 'til you drop or head to the amusement park (cause there isn’t one) so what I suggest you do is grab your dog and your camera and head out for a walk in the countryside. There are various interesting rural areas to choose from, but today I’m going to focus on one in particular on the northern part of the island: Selmun.

Selmun is a five-minute drive away from the village of Mellieha. Basically, when you get to the sign which says: Welcome to Mellieha, you take a right and keep driving until you get to a castle-like building. Here is where I suggest you park your car and bring out your camera (and your dog if you brought him/her – remember, dogs will die in hot cars).

It’s a calm descent into the peaceful countryside. Here, you’re surrounded by nothing but fields and the one off farmhouse. You will still inevitably bump into the odd family or two (or four) who are out on a picnic but that shouldn’t disturb you from focusing your lens on something cool and green (unless of course their children sound like they’re being slaughtered and barbecued – sorry, it happens – the sound, not the slaughtering of course).

So trek on and enjoy the views; you can’t miss the deep blue sea ahead but you can leave your trunks (or your bikini if you prefer) behind ’cause you surely aren’t going to swim here. Selmun is situated on a promontory; which means cliffs, sharp drops, and then sea. So unless you’re a daredevil with no family and life insurance, I strongly suggest you don’t go there. Everyone else, don’t forget that spare roll of film, you’ll regret it.
