Antofagasta, Where the Desert and the Sea Meets

Antofagasta is known as the mining capital of Chile but it is more than that. Its landscapes and architecture from the period of nitrate makes it look like a tourist place in the northern desert of Chile. That's my beloved city.

Antofagasta is the city where I was born and raised. “The Pearl of the North” as it is known in Chile, is a port city in the north area of the country, it’s located about 700 miles to the north of Santiago (the capital of Chile). Where it’s summer all year long, as a city in the desert most of the days are sunny and have a hot weather.

Among the places to visit are the historic pier built during the period of nitrate, it was there where the Chilean troops made the landing in 1879, an event that marked the beginning of the Pacific War, also the railway “Antofagasta and Bolivia”, where the beauty of the trains are present, the ruins of Huanchaca where silver was melted by Bolivian’s companies, there are also natural beauties like: “La portada” and the beaches (known for its crystal clear water). Example: Juan Lopez’ beach.

Without a doubt, when I walk through my city, I realize I’m in the presence of a city full of culture and history, where the arid desert’s landscapes, together with a large blue sea makes it a perfect match!
