Surfing at Dusk: Maori Bay, North Island, New Zealand

New Zealand is a beautiful place. You can be in a city one moment, take a half an hour drive and you are in the country or the rain forest (the type you would expect to see a dinosaur to step out of). Surfing off the west coast of New Zealand, just a short drive from Auckland

Maori Bay (North Island), is one of those places. A fairly short drive west from Auckland towards Muriwai brings you to this beach enclosed by cliffs, black volcanic sand and with it’s own sea bird colony.
I hear the water is a little cold (as usual in NZ), but the waves were good (when we were there), and it seems to be a favourite spot for the locals. You just need to walk down a little goat track to get to the beach but it is well worth it.
