A beautiful summer destination, the island of Sifnos in Greece was our family vacation spot last August. Me, my sister, and my mother needed this time of relaxation, peace and quiet, after a very difficult winter. This calm little island with its hospitable people and breathtaking nature.
Sifnos belongs to the famous Cyclades, a group of islands with history that goes well back before 2000 BC. Sifnos is a rather small island and less altered due to tourism than others. The architecture is beautiful: all the houses are traditionally whitewashed with blue or green blinds on the windows, which come in great contrast to the bare earthy and rocky environment. Churches are practically everywhere, they might be as many as the houses, but they are unique, like the monastery church of Chrysopigi, one of the most famous spots of the island because it stands just above the sea, on a perfect place for diving off the rocks and exploring!
However, my favourite place of Sifnos was the beach of Platis Yalos, a sandy coast on the south of the island. We were staying at a small pension which was literally at 50m from the shore, thus, everyday we would get up and head directly to the water! After a quick dip in the crystal-clear sea, we would buy coffee, orange juice and cheese-pies, a traditional Greek snack, from a nearby cafe and we would have our breakfast right there on the chaise-longs… after many hours (and swims) later, we would get really hungry, so we would head to one of the many traditional tavernas nearby that serve food that comes really close to homemade Greek cuisine! Even at night, there are one or two bars that play very good music and serve excellent cocktails!
If you want to go clubbing, then you have to eventually take your car and head to Chora, the island’s capital, which is more lively at night! However, Sifnos will never disappoint you if your are looking for a tranquil and romantic summer break.
