Mourisca Beach in Bueu

Mourisca Beach in Bueu, Pontevedra (Spain) is probably the best kept secret in the Rias Baixas. Not even during the hottest days of summer does this beach gets swarmed by people. The water here is clean and full of life and in the late afternoon, you can watch fishermen as they set off on their daily task, followed by seagulls and ignoring the competence from a couple of cormorants.

Mourisca Beach is located at the entrance of the Ria de Pontevedra, in Cape Udra – a beautiful spot with a nice trekking circuit. In Cape Udra there is also an open air park where people have barbecues and a enjoy small rock festival called A Noite do Trasno (Night of the Goblin), which takes place during the summer.

There are several reasons why Mourisca is our favourite beach. The sand is thick and walking on it is relaxing and invigorating. When the water’s temperature is good (not very often) it is really good fun to swim among the small fishing boats tied close to the sand. You can also snorkel and watch fish and mollusks. Most of the people who come here are local people who try to avoid the other busier and noisier beaches in the village. On the opposite shore of the Ria lie Portonovo and Sanxenxo and you don’t need a very clear day to see them. Tulla Beach is on the right, and you can get there by swimming or by a path through the rocks. Since Mourisca is quite a small beach with a dingy road, and there are just a few houses nearby, it is very quiet even in the months of July or August. During those months, some caravans take advantage of the council’s permissiveness regarding free camping. Besides, it is the only beach I know where you can take your dog without causing any trouble. Nobody feels disturbed by them.
