When the fair came to town I packed the Vivi and some E-6 slide film to go and see what I could capture. Although getting some puzzled looks from the many DSLR users there, I had a great time and once again the little Vivi left me more than happy with the results.

Once a year, starting the first week of October at the Forest Recreation Ground in Nottingham, the fair comes to town. Not just any old fair though, this is the Goose Fair and was once said to be one of Europe’s biggest dating back more than 700 years.

Although having its roots as a trade event, the modern Goose Fair is more commonly known for its rides, stalls and games. From burger vans to roller coasters the fair has something for everyone.

It would be fair to say that I’m not so interested in the rides anymore but not wanting to miss out on a photo opportunity, I packed the trusty Vivi and some Fujifilm E-6 last October for a trip.

Obviously given the lights and movement of the rides ideally you’d go at night but my fixed shutter speed – fixed aperture restricts me to daylight only. Don’t let this put you off though as I found the experience quite liberating.

As the many DSLR users present that day remained static striving for that perfect shot (no doubt a bit of cliché long exposure of the rides) I was more free, and able to move around and simply shoot. Leaving the technical constraints behind, it seems to have helped release more creativity from me.

The fair itself buzzes with life as people, music, and lights create an atmosphere you can soak up and reflect in your images with cross-processing saturating the already bright and bold scenery.

It’s certainly an experience I’d do again and although I would like to return on an evening with my DSLR (after all I am partial to a cliché) you can guarantee I’ll also be there the following morning too with the Vivi in hand, getting puzzled glances from the digital crowd again wondering why I don’t have a ‘proper’ camera!
