Tung Choi Street and Ladies Street: a Mirage-Like Flea Market in Mong Kok, Hong Kong

On a hot summer's day, most people would prefer to go to an air conditioned mall, but what about you? Would you come to a hot and stuffy flea market like Ladies Street even just for the bargains alone? Whether you're interested in some sightseeing or shopping, Ladies Street in Hong Kong is something that you might want to visit.

Regardless if the temperature is in the tens or thirties, the empty Tung Choi Street, surrounded by Chinese-style buildings, would transform into the busy Ladies Street come late afternoon.

Ladies Street is a mini Hong Kong – a flea market that combines the best of shopping and dining. Tourists like to shop at Ladies Street, while I think that it is also a treasure trove for locals. Previously, the target shoppers are normally the ladies, earning it the name Ladies Street. But as time went by, there are more varieties of goods on sale now.

Now, you can find everything from clothing, footwear to toy bananas at Ladies Street. The most interesting part is the goods’ “seafood price”. As this is a tourist attraction, when one asks for the price, the vendor would normally quote a sky high price. Just pretend to walk away and the vendor would shout “Ok! Ok! I will sell you at a lower price!” If you are lucky, you might get it at half price! Therefore, do remember to bargain, you might save some money!

Besides the multitude of stalls, remember to explore the side lanes. These lanes are a foodie’s paradise. They have all types of cuisines such as Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Taiwanese, British, Italian, and French! Whether you are with your friends or family, there would be one that meets your needs. Besides the restaurants, there are shops selling ladies’ fashion, party costumes, music CDs etc. You can eat and dig around for knickknacks simultaneously.

In this mini Hong Kong, you can see all facets of life. If it is redeveloped like nearby Sneaker Street, everything will be gone forever, and will be rebuilt in 3, 5, 7 years’ time. But things will be different. Use your Lomography camera to record the Ladies Street of today now!
